Medieval Galway Audio Tour
2013
Putting Music In Its Place was a smartphone audio tour I created for the Galway Early Music Festival using the mobile location storytelling platform 7scenes.
The audio tour used the GPS sensor on the user’s smartphone to trigger audio media at various locations around Galway city. This audio media were aural soundscapes of what that location might have sounded like during medieval times, which augmented the user’s experience of those locations in the present-day.
The tour evoked the bustle of merchant ships unloading their wares at the Spanish Arch, the calls and songs of hawkers at the Galway market, the raucous traditional music emanating from local medieval hostelries, the golden sound of harp echoing from the walls of a stone castle, and the thunder of hooves and clash of lances as knights joust in Eyre Square.
Unfortunately the 7scenes app has not been updated recently and doesn’t seem to work on smartphones at the moment. You can listen to the tracks from the app below.
